Briefely about LRIT
The system Long-range identification and tracking system (LRIT) provides Authorities positions reports for merchant ships via INMARSAT C. Position reports are mainly used for Security, Safety, environmental and traffic monitoring.
Application
SOLAS V/19-1 applies to the following vessels engaged in international voyages:
i. Cargo Vessels, including High Speed Craft, equal to or over 300 GT
ii. Passenger ships, including High Speed Passenger craft
iii. Mobile Offshore Drilling Units
iv. Yachts equal to or over 300 GT, certified under the 'Large Yacht Code' or holding a Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate
Exemptions:
Those ships operating exclusively in sea area A1 and fitted with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) are exempt from LRIT regulations. The Faroese Maritime Authority wishes to advise ship owners, whose ships occasionally visit a foreign shipyards or harbour to obtain a test certificate.

Required Action by Owners/Operators
Ship must be LRIT tested and certified no later than 1
st January 2008. Please keep in mind, the deadline is less than 3 months away
Faroese Maritime Authority has appointed Pole Star Space Applications Limited (Pole Star) to provide a complete LRTI system fulfilling the SOLAS V/19-1 requirement.
Ship certification procedure.
Shipowners must apply directly to Pole Star, for testing and certification of their Sat C system, at the following e-mail address:
lrittesting@polestarglobal.com
or alternatievely Phone +44 20 7313 7400 or Fax +44 20 7313 7401. Testing costs 200£ per terminal.
Pole Star will submit a questionnaire concerning the nominated Sat-C terminal. On return of the questionnaire a 30- 48 hour remote testing procedure will be carried out. It is important that you ensure your terminals are switched on and logged into the Inmarsat network for the duration of the test.
Once the test is completed, and if the terminal is successful, Pole Star will charge a certification payment of 100£ and then a compliance LRIT certificate will be issued within 14 days.
From testing experience it is known that approximately 20% Sat-C terminals fail tests. Owners of ships with terminals who do not pass LRIT testing, will need to either upgrade one of the Inmarsat C Mobile Earth Stations onboard, or preferably install a 'stand alone' LRIT terminal.
Once the certificate has been issued the terminal will be activated to send 4 position reports a day. FMA will pay this expense
